Hiking with your dog can be one of the most rewarding experiences for pet lovers\u2014but it takes some planning and preparation to do it right.<\/p>\n

Your pup needs just as much gear and attention as you do. It\u2019s important to remember that dogs, just like humans, can get injured, overheat, dehydrate, become exhausted, or suffer from altitude sickness\u2014and they can\u2019t always tell you when something\u2019s wrong.<\/p>\n

Here are some tips to help keep your four-legged companion safe and happy on the trail.<\/p>\n

Pick a Trail That Matches Your Dog\u2019s Abilities<\/strong>
Know the terrain ahead of time to avoid surprises. I usually hike a trail solo before bringing my dogs to make sure it\u2019s manageable for them. Like humans, dogs need to train. Don\u2019t start with a 12-mile hike if your dog is new to hiking. Start small and work your way up. It\u2019s safer and more enjoyable for both of you.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind that not all \u201cdog-friendly\u201d trails are easy\u2014Modern Hiker offers trail maps that include dog info, but difficulty can vary. Also, consider the elevation. Dogs can experience altitude sickness too. Signs include fatigue, heavy panting, loss of appetite, or vomiting. Vet-info has some great resources on this.<\/p>\n

Check the Weather<\/strong>
If it feels hot to you, it\u2019s even hotter for your dog. Dogs don\u2019t sweat like we do and can overheat easily. Choose shady or water-adjacent trails, and start early to avoid the afternoon heat. Remember, hot rocks can burn their paw pads\u2014consider dog boots for protection.<\/p>\n

Update ID Tags and Collar Info<\/strong>
Make sure your dog\u2019s ID tags are current and the collar fits properly. Even well-trained dogs can get spooked and bolt. Microchips and ID tags give you peace of mind in case they wander off.<\/p>\n

Pack Plenty of Food and Water<\/strong>
Your dog will need more water and food than usual on the trail. Bring extra, and feed snacks throughout the hike to keep their energy up. Don\u2019t forget a portable water bowl!<\/p>\n

Even if your dog is friendly, not everyone\u2014or every dog\u2014you meet on the trail will be. Keep your dog calm and under control when others approach. Dog paw pads can crack or tear. Even a small tear can hurt, and dogs won\u2019t always show it until it\u2019s serious. Their pads should feel tough like sandpaper. Regular stops for water, snacks, and rest are key to keeping you and your pup safe and happy.<\/p>\n

Check for Ticks<\/strong>
Keep a fine-tooth tick comb in your car and use it after every hike. You\u2019ll be surprised how many small ticks can go unnoticed. The comb also helps remove other burrs or debris stuck in your dog\u2019s coat.<\/p>\n

Inspect Paw Pads Again<\/strong>
